HELP!!!!!!!!

The website was off-line for almost 3 weeks in March of 2010 due to technical issues originating with the Internet Service Provider. A dedicated business connection was arranged for and the site went back on-line on March 18, 2010. This has greatly increased the cost of operations, which also include subscriptions to historical and genealogical database websites, equipment, software, research-related expenses, postage, and the like.

This website was founded in the fall of 2002. DVRBS, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit. While monetary donations have always been accepted, I rarely have actively solicited them, and carried most of the expenses of operating the site out of my own pocket. However, 2010 has seen me having to retire early due to disability, which is obviously going to make things tight at the Cohen household. For that reason, I am asking that if you can, please make a tax-deductible donation in any amount to the site.

To donate by check or money order, make them payable to DVRBS Inc., and mail to PO Box 1466, Camden NJ 08105-0466. I am hoping to raise about $4000 to cover costs through the end of 2010.

*Making Dreams Come True.... One Adoption At A Time*

March 2, 2010 - March 10, 2010

Not much got done this week, due to health and family issues. Still, three new pages for your enjoyment.

There was a IP address change last week, which has caused some people to have experienced problems opening up the web-site. Retyping www.dvrbs.com in your browser should do the trick! I'm considering getting a dedicated line for the website, if I can raise enough money to do so.

I still have to do the page on Samuel Price and Jeremy Kane. Ouch!

A REMINDER: There are two social/charitable events coming up this month, that I recommend attending and supporting.

ONE> On March 19, 2010 at the Bellmawr Ballroom, Lewis Avenue in Bellmawr the Nicholas J. Parisi Memorial Scholarship Fund will be presenting its 2010 Beef & Beer. Another great event that has done a lot of good, the $25.00 for a ticket may be the best money you spend this year. TO PURCHASE TICKETS IN ADVANCE PLEASE CALL Mike Parisi Sr. at 609-519-1268, Anita Parisi at (609) 519-1257, or Michael Parisi Jr.: 609-519-1258.

TWO> On April 23, 2010 friends, family, and supporters of the Camden Fire Department will gather for a retirement dinner honoring Deputy Chief Paul Price. Fire Fighter Dan Seybert is handling the tickets. He can be reached at work 856-757-7548 or by cell 856-816-8685.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. This case remains unsolved,  almost 39 years later. If you have any information concerning this crime, please e-mail me. Your identity will be kept confidential and there is a reward for information leading to an arrest.

February 23, 2010 - March 1, 2010

I had to put Dominic the Border Collie down Monday.... a dear friend whose face has been a familiar sight here since the summer of 2005. It has been a rough week.....

I had received a couple of e-mails with additions to pages on Tenth Street, Clementon World War II casualty John Foxhill, and a number of other topics. I had hoped to address all of those issues, but it was not to be... I hope to get them done this week.... I'm a bit of a mess of course right now.

I still have to do the page on Samuel Price and Jeremy Kane. Ouch!

February 16, 2010 - February 22, 2010

A better week than I had thought it was going to be, including two visits to the Camden County Historical Society. NEW STUFF, OLD PAGE: No less than FOUR complete columns by Ben Courter, 3 of them concerning Camden Politics in the 19th Century. NEW PAGES: Camden firefighters Harvey Watts, Sam Curriden, and William Chambers; businessman George W. Jobes, and Detective John Painter, who served on the Camden Police Department for FORTY-EIGHT (48) years! The pages on Courter, Watts, and Painter have A LOT of new (to this site) newspaper clippings. VERY COOL STUFF!!!!

Obviously I'm still playing catch-up, but this was a better week than most... until yesterday, when my very old and very dear best canine friend Dominic the Border Collie took a real turn for the worse. AT 14 he is a very old dog, and that is the one negative about adopting older dogs.. they do get old and we must say goodbye to them. Monday is going to be a rough day, I think I'm going to have to put him to sleep..... and then get my act together and find another old dog who needs a home.

I received a couple of e-mails with additions to pages on Tenth Street, Clementon World War II casualty John Foxhill, and a number of other topics. I had hoped to address all of those issues today, but it was not to be... I hope to get them done this week.... and of course all sorts of other things of interest!

I DID get the William Chambers page going, still have to do the page on Samuel Price and Jeremy Kane. Ouch!

February 8, 2010 - February 15, 2010

Another week with more done behind the scenes than appears. I received a number of photos this week concerning the Jobes family of Camden, among whose members included firefighter William Jobes, who was one of the three Camden firefighters lost in the 1906 Armory Fire,  and Civil War hero Captain Samuel Jobes. I did manage to get a TENTH STREET PAGE started.

There are two social/charitable events coming up this month, that I recommend attending and supporting.

STILL TO BE DONE: As always, it seems like I'm playing catch-up.... THIS WEEK I WILL get the pages going on firefighter William P. Chambers and Samuel Price, and of course, a page has to be set up for Lance Corporal Jeremy Kane, the Marine from Cherry Hill who was killed in Afghanistan by a homicide bomber. I can't help but wonder if Lance Corporal Kane's death and the deaths of many others in Afghanistan can be attributed as much to the "Rules of Engagement" imposed on our military by the current regime in Washington than to the efficiency of the Taliban insurgents themselves.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. February 2, 2010 - February 7, 2010

There is a too-small page concerning the late Arthur J. Gibson, another career Camden fire fighter, and one about the late Dr. Charles E. Brimm.

There are three social/charitable events coming up this month, that I recommend attending and supporting.

ONE> On February 13th at St. Cecelia's R.C. Church in Pennsauken the Scouting For A Cure Dinner Dancing and DJ FIGHT AGAINST CANCER party.... call 856-956 6128  or Louie Hays 856-278-4851 or Will George at 856-625-5133 and online at info@scoutingforacure.org

TWO> On March 19, 2010 at the Bellmawr Ballroom, Lewis Avenue in Bellmawr the Nicholas J. Parisi Memorial Scholarship Fund will be presenting its 2010 Beef & Beer. Another great event that has done a lot of good, the $25.00 for a ticket may be the best money you spend this year. TO PURCHASE TICKETS IN ADVANCE PLEASE CALL Mike Parisi Sr. at 609-519-1268, Anita Parisi at (609) 519-1257, or Michael Parisi Jr.:609-519-1258.

THREE> On April 23, 2010 friends, family, and supporters of the Camden Fire Department will gather for a retirement dinner honoring Deputy Chief Paul Price. Fire Fighter Dan Seybert is handling the tickets. He can be reached at work 856-757-7548 or by cell 856-816-8685.

As always, it seems like I'm playing catch-up.... I hope to get the pages going on firefighter William P. Chambers and Samuel Price. I've received a wonderful set of pictures about the late Battalion Chief John Lutts, who served from 1900 through 1932, and pages need to be done on the above mentioned Captain Samuel B. Jobes and with any luck at least two other members of that family.

Needless to say, a page has to be set up for Lance Corporal Jeremy Kane, the Marine from Cherry Hill who was killed in Afghanistan by a homicide bomber.

This case remains unsolved,  almost 39 years later. If you have any information concerning this crime, please e-mail me. Your identity will be kept confidential and there is a reward for information leading to an arrest.

January 26, 2010 - February 1, 2010

An interesting week, more productive than it really would appear. First, there is a link to a wonderful video on YouTube concerning the old movie theaters in Camden and South Jersey, presented by Allen Hauss and the Camden County Historical Society. There is a new page about retired Camden firefighter Grant Keller, who is now in South Carolina operating a boarding kennel. I've updated the page about Camden firefighter Harry M. Chambers, and corrected the firefighter's listing to include his brother, William Pringle Chambers, who had been listed as William Pringle in the 1994 125th Anniversary book about the Camden Fire Department. I'll be putting together a page about William Pringle Chambers this week, and also hope to finish one I've been working on concerning Battalion Chief Samuel M. Price, whose career spanned four decades beginning in 1900. Samuel M. Price also was Harry Chambers' father-in-law. There are several new pictures of tugboats on the Delaware, thanks to Jim Lapp, and I've made a couple of corrections to the page about Camden firefighter Edward G. Glaze.

A much-loved physician in Camden, Dr. Charles Brimm, passed away on Thursday, January 28. I will be assembling material for a web-page about Dr. Brimm which should be ready sometime in February.

DOG ADVENTURES- On Wednesday while at the Post Office in East Camden I spotted two small dogs running loose in East Camden, around 3:00 PM. The first dog was some sort of mixed-breed on Federal Street near 30th.... it's a miracle the dog wasn't hit by a car, as traffic was quite heavy at the time. The last I saw of him he was running towards Carman Street. I got back into my truck and drove around the corner, first heading west on Carman Street, then, after traveling south for a block on South 29th Street, east on Stevens Street, at the Cramer Elementary School. ON this block I saw ANOTHER small dog, running loose with no collar, and scavenging food from a trash can across the street from the school. I parked my car, grabbed the leash and dog treats I always ride with, and after about 10 minutes was able to get the little fellow leashed up and off the street. The dog, who appeared to be a pug-chihuahua mix, had no collar, no tag, was not neutered, and didn't seem to have a good idea about walking on a leash. He was/is, however, quite submissive and well socialized to people and other dogs. I had an appointment in Voorhees to go to, then, after stopping at my house, called Camden's animal control department and turned the little guy over to them. If no one reported him missing and retrieved him, he would have been taken to the Camden County Animal Shelter in Blackwood. He is a real sweet dog. I just hate seeing a dog running loose, this is the fifth stray I've pulled off the streets of Camden and Pennsauken in the last 15 months.

December 15, 2009 - January 25, 2010

Well, needless to say, it has been a peculiar time for me. I'm nowhere near 100%, as I've had to switch medications in mid-January and basically start all over again. OK, enough negativity, I've been able to pull myself together enough to get a few things done, which are listed below. Ever forward, I'd like to think, so with luck (and modern medicine) I'll be back in the saddle to one extent or another!

New pages about Camden journalist and historian Paul Zachary, firefighters David Sanders, who passed away recently, and John H. Lutts, who served from 1899 through 1933. Also a small page about  Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairview

.

I'm still adjusting to the new medicines, apparently this might take a bit longer than anticipated, but is necessary. The new page is about Edward Jubb, a Camden fire fighter in the 1890s who, after he had left the department, was killed while lending assistance to his former brother firemen. Not exactly a line of duty death, as he wasn't on the force at the time of the incident, but worth noting and worth honoring.

December 1, 2009 - December 7, 200 9

Well friends, this has been an interesting week in the City of Camden.... congratulations going out to Joseph Marini on his retirement from the Camden Fire Department and congratulations to the new acting Chief of Department, Thomas Quinn. As I've stated elsewhere, the Camden Fire Department does more with less under more difficult conditions than any other Fire Department in the country and probably on the planet, and irregardless of what is printed in the local newspapers, the people and homeowners of the City of Camden owe Joe Marini and the  Fire Department as a whole a great big thank you for keeping losses of lives and property to a minimum.

As for the website this week, I've been a bit under the weather, new medications have made working on the site a bit problematic, but rest assured there will be new material as soon as I get back on track.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. New this week- with more coming - Stan Bednarczyk's newspaper columns and magazine articles. Stan wrote for the Camden County Record in the 70s and 80s, and has also published in the Polish American Journal and the Courier-Post. During his time with record especially, he had his finger on the pulse of life in Whitman Park and Fairview. There is a new page about Camden firefighter Leonard J. Megee, and a new page for Sheridan Street.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. New this week- VIDEO from the American Legion Post 68 Flag Disposal ceremony, taken last June, two new Camden fire fighter's pages, pictures from the Camden Fire Department retirement dinner, and pages on two people very active in Camden civic and medical life, Mrs. Zula Boyd Casselman and Dr. Mustapha Khan. There were a lot of little tune-ups to other "people" pages as well.

November 10, 2009 - November 16, 200 9

A tough week just went by, as the Camden Fire Department family said goodbye to another retired firefighter, Captain Jim McGrory, who passed last week. Captain McGrory compiled the list of active and retired firefighters that was used in the 1994 125th Anniversary book about the CFD, and it is with a humble heart that his work has been and will be continued on this website.

I've had a brutal week in relation to events at my day job, and will be attending to a lot of personal and health related stuff this week. I've sort of had my brain on lockdown a lot lately, and haven't been getting as much done as I would have in ordinary circumstances.

Well, our Phillies gave it a good run, but what's done is done, and now it is time for "wait until next year". A sad farewell to retired Camden fire fighters Phil MacDonald and Michael Carpenter, both of whom passed recently, and congratulations to Paul Matyjasik and James Johnston, who will be feted at the Departmental retirement dinner this Friday. I did some minor tweaks on 19 other "people" pages, mostly relating to links with pictures of Chiefs Michalak and MacDowell.

RED LETTER DAYS- The Phillies in the World Series.... if I told you that I haven't been distracted this week I'd be kidding you. Watching the Phillies is always a nail-bitng experience.. that is the nature of things I suppose. All things considered, it's a good thing, I've been able to tune out all the political commercials! Don't forget to vote on Tuesday... your life may depend on it.

What's new on the site? Marlton Avenue on the streets page... another work in progress! New pages on three members of the Camden Fire Department, including Battalion Chief Philip Maycott and Chief of Department Edward MacDowell. I gave the Arlington Street page a MAJOR tune-up as well.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. RED LETTER DAYS... as the Phillies have won the National League pennant for the second year in a row. Having grown up in the area, having lived through the 1964 debacle and the three heartbreaking years in the 1970s when they made the playoffs but could not close the deal, I NEVER expected to see the Phillies in a World Series, let alone to win it... after all, before the magical year of 1980, they never had. The 1983 "wheeze kids" lost to the Orioles, and lets face it, the 1994 Phillies team that lost to the Blue Jays in 1994 were not typical of the Phillies from 1984 until recently. Most of those teams were terrible, and there really did not seem to be commitment to win on the part of ownership. Pat Gillick, the former general manager who put last years team together and is in great part responsible for this one changed that. The Phillies won it all last year, and are quite capable of doing it again. So, as the song goes, lets "root-root-root for the home team"!

Only one new page this week, a Camden firefighter from days gone by, Charles Lawyer. Those late night Phillies games caught up with me.... "red fever" as they call it will wear you out! Those late night games are rough on us old-timers!

October 6, 2009 - October 12, 200 9

All the pictures from 2009 Animal Adoption Center Dog Walk in Haddon Heights are up. There are 10 new "people" pages, three of whom recently passed away, former Chief Harold Melleby and James L. Snyder of the Camden Police Department; and long-time music teacher in the Camden school system Frank B. Oppecker Jr. Six of the other new pages are former members of the Camden Department, and the last a page about 19th Century Camden lawyer John K.R. Hewitt.

Don't stop with the new pages this week! On the Ablett Village page, from October of 1946, the entire twelve-page VILLAGE CRIER newsletter. Have Fun!!!

September 28, 2009 - October 5, 200 9

OK... the 1918-1919 Camden City Directory is up, a lot of work and well worth the effort. I've also reproduced and posted the Camden High School Purple & Gold Yearbook for the Class of January 1937. There is one new "streets' page, about Fairview Street, and there is a lot of new material about 6th Street. Three more Camden firefighters round out the new pages for the week.

On Sunday the Funky Dogs and I took part in the October 2009 Animal Adoption Center Dog Walk in Haddon Heights. I' shot A LOT of pictures, which will be up on a new page by next Monday.

September 22, 2009 - September 28, 200 9

A tough week, a few hardware issues, my back is killing me... ouch! I'm still working on scanning the The 1918-1919 Camden City Directory.. I'm about halfway through the people. A major tune-up of Rabbi Riff's page, thanks to Steve Ross, also a lot of work on old-time Camden policemen John "Happy" Kowal and Vernon Jones. Three new pages about Camden's fire fighters, one of the originals, one from the recent past, and one who just retired... that's Chief Paul Matyjasik.. thanks to Bob Bartosz for pictures of Paul's last day on the job! Three new "streets" pages... and I'm telling you, 6th Street is going to take some time getting done, as it may be the longest street in Camden.... Federal and River might be longer, but it would be close, I think.  I'm running behind again on getting everything done that I would like to get done, which is frustrating. Oh well, can't do anything but the best I can.

Coming soon... the October 2009 Animal Adoption Center Dog Walk in Haddon Heights. BE THERE.. and as always, Have Fun!

September 15, 2009 - September 22, 200 9

Of the new stuff, it is seven more pages about Camden's fire fighters, and one about a Camden policeman, and two more "streets pages. On the older pages, a MAJOR tune-up to "Life and Work on the Delaware River"... this page has a lot of high resolution aerial photos, be sure to click on the images for enlarged views... a big thanks to Dave Boone for the pictures there, and to Bob Bartosz for photos to be added next week. Don't miss the page on Leon "No-nose" Grenkwicz, where I have added three new news articles, and a new edition of the Camden Times.

I visited St. Joseph's Polish Catholic Church this Sunday... what a beautiful building. Even if you are not Polish and not Catholic, it is well worth the time and effort to see and hear Mass celebrated here.

Coming up next week or the week after... The 1918-1919 Camden City Directory, in PDF format.... so tell me, who loves ya, baby?

As always, Have Fun!

September 8, 2009 - September 14, 200 9

This week it is quality (at least I hope you think so) over quantity. The interviews with William Yeager are presented not as text or plain audio, but as WMV video files, using pictures when I had appropriate material. PLEASE let me know what you think of these. These are for the first interviews and first videos of a historical nature that I've made for the website.

What else? Two new historical texts! First, the diary of Camden fire fighter H. Jarrett Zander, who was active from 1914 through 1941, which you can access from his page, and second, a 1961 edition of the Camden Times, an 8-page newspaper that had at least a 67 year run in Stockton and East Camden.

There is a new page on Ormond Avenue, which needs a lot of work, but it is start. The last of the new pages is a gem. Sandy White-Grear of the Haddon Township Historical Society, sent in a wonderful article about the A.N. Stollewerck chocolate factory, which stood for so many years across from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on Haddon Avenue.

 As always, Have Fun!

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. September 1, 2009 - September 7, 200 9

Labor Day 2009! September marks the seventh year that DVRBS has been on the Internet, which is pretty amazing. What a ride!!! So many good things have come from this that I never would have imagined, the best ones of course where long lost friends and family members have found each other. Ok, among other things, here is what is new this week:

1> The entire 1906 Camden City Directory

2> Photos from the Camden Fire Department Reunion held August 26th at The PUB in Pennsauken.

3> Another trip to the park with The Funky Dogs.

4> Two more pages on Camden Fire Fighters, and two on businessmen who operated in Camden in days gone by.

5> A new East Camden story from Ron Blizard.

6> A lot of new pictures from the 300 block of Liberty Street. Sadly, the old synagogue was badly damaged by fire a few days ago.

7> ZEPPELINS - for the aviation buffs, Catherine Grenhart send me a Powerpoint file which you can download with a lot of pictures and diagrams of the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg, also pictures of several of the float planes that where ued in trans-Atlantic flight prior to the jet age.

The  "Who was No Nose" mystery has been solved. Leon Grenkwicz, known to most who saw him as "No Nose", received his injury in 1945 while sitting in a parked car with Romeo DeSanctis, who had just testified before a Grand Jury in Camden about an armed robbery. Coming from a passing car, bullets from a machine gun killed DeSanctis instantly, while Grenkwicz was disfigured for life. I had the honor of speaking with William Yeager, former Camden Director of Public Safety, who spent well over 30 years with the Camden Police force, and who as a young policeman was assigned to guarding Grenkwicz at the hopsital for two weeks after the shooting. I'll be working on bringing his commentary about Camden to the website, either as audio or trnscribed to text, over the next few weeks.

THINGS TO DO: I've drafted a letter to send to what I believe are descendants of Chief Charles Worthington in Florida, hopefully I've made the right deductions, and they respond positively so that a monument can be erected on his grave. The letter will me mailed this week, after that, we sit back and hope for the best!

THANK YOU Frank Kitchmire, for the Pulaski Day parade news clippings.
