LIEUTENANT COMMANDER
CHARLES G. COTTON was born in North Carolina in 1887. He was a veteran
of World War I. By 1920 he had married and moved to Norfolk VA. He was
working as a marine engineer. Charles and Mary Cotton had their first
child, Alice E. Cotton, in 1920. The family later moved to Newport VA,
where Charles Cotton worked as a machinist in a shipyard. By the April
of 1930 the Cotton family included three daughters, Alice E., Mary J.,
and Lila Lee Cotton. The Cotton family was living at 71 Main Street in
Newport, Warwick County, Virginia, at the time of the 1930 census. The
family moved to Collingswood NJ around 1939, where they resided at 521
Jessamine Avenue.
Lieutenant Commander
Cotton passed away in the Marine Hospital in Baltimore MD on March 2,
1949. Funeral services were held at Foster's Funeral Home at Haddon and
Lees Avenue in Collingswood on March 4th, after which he was buried in
Gates NC. He was survived by his wife, daughters, and two
brothers, Curtis B. Cotton of Galveston TX, and James C. Cotton.
