Washington Street

WASHINGTON STREET was named after George Washington. When originally laid out, Washington Street east of Broadway was known as Morris Street, in honor of Robert Morris, the New Jersey financier who obtained funding for America’s forces during the Revolutionary war. In 1882, to avoid confusion, the name of Morris street was dropped, and the street became Washington Street for its entire length. Similar adjustments were made for Berkeley Street and Clinton Street.

Do you have a Washington Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

YOUTH, l6, NABBED AS DRUG PEDDLER
Held In $1000 Bail After Witnesses
Tell of Buying Heroin Downtown

Two alleged drug peddlers one a boy, 16 y ears old, were held in $1000 bail each by Recorder Stackhouse today.

The youth is William Lovern, 210 Washington Street. With Harry Bolt, 24 years old, 420 Beckett street, he was arrested early today after they are alleged to have sold decks of heroin at Second and Beckett streets.

David Hunt and “Dorie” Guthrie, said two packages of heroin and cocaine were found on the suspect. Both denied their guilt.

Youths, who acted as amateur detectives to gather evidence accused young Lovern as the “little fellow” who sold them each a deck of heroin for one dollar. They said Lovern refused to take 75 cents for the drug and asked for the larger amount.
