The Delaware Valley Rhythm
& Blues Society
Rhythm & Blues Show
Beginning in March of 1997, The Rhythm & Blues Show aired on WNJC 1360 AM in Sewell NJ. The show originally aired on Saturday mornings, and it was it this time that it achieved its greatest success, as a three hour show running from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, broadcasting live from WNJC's studios in Sewell. The show featured then and now a mix of oldies, blues, jazz, soul, zydeco, and classic rhythm & blues music. The show also focused on community issues in Camden NJ, a town that was and is woefully underserved by local broadcast media.
In August of 1999 I took a job in public purchasing, which brought a financial challenge to the program. The show was supported by the sale of advertising, and with me working in government procurement, potential for conflicts of interest had to be avoided. The airtime eventually was cut to two hours.
On the suggestion of interested friends of the show, the Delaware Valley Rhythm & Blues Society was formally organized in 2001. The show switched it's day and time to Friday, 12:00 Midnight to 6:00 AM Saturday morning. More importantly, an investment was made in equipment and a phone connection, and the show aired from Camden NJ. The show also began broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week over the Internet, over the Shoutcast network,
In June of 2002, the directors of the society decided to fully direct its efforts to the Internet broadcast, as listenership had failed to materialize in the overnight AM time slot.
In 2003, DVRBS will continue to bring the music to the world via the Internet, and will add pages to its webs domain relating both the the music and the Camden NJ community.
